Program Notes

The Alexandria Suite, comprising a flute solo, a cello solo, and a flute/cello duet, evolved out of a collaboration with flutist Alexandria Greenwell. The name Alexandria, with its rich historical connotations, provided the setting for what became an exploration of the unique power of each of these two instruments. For me, the solo cello and flute came to embody the masculine and feminine, respectively. By composing two solos and a duet, each voice establishes its independence and strength before the two come together in a dance.
