Program Notes
Dance of the Ancestors was premiered in May, 2011 by the Pacific Rim Gamelan. Formally, the piece was inspired by the “concertino” and the “ripieno” of the Baroque concerto grosso, in which the soloists develop a musical relationship with the larger orchestra through a kind of dialogue between the two. This work is for solo violin, solo cello, and Balinese gamelan ensemble, an Indonesian orchestra of bronze metallophones and gongs. In this piece, I tried to reinvent the string instruments by reconnecting them to the ancestral sounds of ancient strings.
