I wrote Il Sogno di Tiziana in 2007 as a birthday present for my partner and collaborator, Tiziana DellaRovere. She inspired me to write something unapologetically romantic. It is the only piece of music I have ever composed for and about a person. I originally entitled it, “Il Notturno di Tiziana,” thinking that it would take the form of a nocturne dedicated to her, but as the piece outgrew the definition of a nocturne, we renamed it “Tiziana’s Dream.” Originally for solo piano, I later reorchestrated the piece for the oboe, violin, cello, piano quartet in the present version.
