“Breath of the Goddess”
By Tiziana DellaRovere

Nel silenzio della notte,
Ho sentito il sospiro della vita.
La vita che accarezza le mie vene
Cerca l’amore sconfinato.

Questo desiderio che trema nel mio corpo
Per l’abbraccio che penetra
Senza toccare,
Come il tremolio luccicante delle foglie
A mezzanotte
Sussurra senza riposo.

Il sospiro della vita mi porta verso te.
In tutto e in niente,
Di fuori e di dentro,
Di sopra e di sotto,
Mi circondi.

E io ti cerco
Nelle praterie senza fine,
Nel profondo del mare,
Nella notte infinita,
E tu sei sempre con me…
Nel mio sospiro d’amore.

In the silence of the night,
I heard the sigh of life
Caressing my veins
In search of a love without bounds.

This desire which trembles in my body
For the embrace which penetrates
Without touching,
Like the glistening shimmer of the leaves
At midnight,
Whispers without rest.

The sigh of life carries me toward you.
In the all and in the nothingness,
From without and from within
From above and from below,
You envelop me.

And I seek you
In the endless plains,
In the depths of the sea,
In the boundless night,
And you are always with me…
In my sigh of love.

Program Notes

In 2009, Tiziana wrote the poem Sospiro in a burst of inspiration, and it is the most sweetly evocative text I have ever worked with. To me, the poem speaks of the yearning for an all-encompassing love which, after a lifetime of searching for in the world, we ultimately discover had been within our own hearts all along. It speaks of becoming a lover in the deepest sense of the word.

I originally composed Sospiro in the winter of 2010 for a premiere performance by the Italian-American baritone, Marco Valerio. In the months that followed, I completed a recomposition of the piece for full orchestra which takes advantage of the operatic and coloristic nature of the work.
